Users can configure the browser to automatically pay a portion of their earnings to websites in Brave's verified creator programme. It essentially pays users for allowing advertisements to be pushed to their browser via an app notification. Brave uses an Ethereum-based crypto asset called Basic Attention Token (BAT) for its rewards scheme. Therefore, Brave attempts to disintermediate online publishers and other businesses dependent on advertising by blocking their ads while encouraging users to view its own in-browser commercials in exchange for rewards. Users can then choose to enable advertisements on individual sites they wish to support. It also blocks trackers and advertisements by default. Brave Shields blocks fingerprinting, cross-site cookies, and automatically upgrades connections to web servers to use secure HTTP. These include Brave's firewall and VPN, privacy-preserving search, a built-in cryptocurrency wallet, and Brave Shields. Although based on Google's popular Chromium platform, Brave offers additional functionality focused on privacy and blockchain technology. Open source Chromium-based web browser Brave has blocked South Africans from withdrawing cryptocurrency rewards earned by viewing advertisements in the application.
